To unzip a compressed file on a Mac, double-click the compressed file and the Archive Utility will extract the files, creating a new folder of its contents next to the compressed folder on your desktop.

You can also right-click the folder and click Open to perform the same operation if the Archive Utility is set as the default.

If not, right-click and select Open with Archive Utility.

Still, the process of unzipping RAR files on Mac is easy thanks to a free and compatible software known as The Unarchiver.

1. Download The Unarchiver.

2. You will be prompted for the type of file you want the software to open.

Make sure RAR Archive is selected in these options.

  1. Then select the Extraction tab to specify how you want the program to extract the folder.
  2. Once you’ve done your setup, right-click on the RAR file and select Open with The Unarchiver.
  3. Select the location of your RAR extraction archive. Once done, click the blue Extract button at the bottom right of the window.
