Method 1: Use Apple ID to reset Mac login password
If you associate your user account with your Apple ID, FileVault doesn’t help. You can use your Apple ID to reset your login password in some versions of macOS.
Step 1: On the login screen, click on your user account, click on the question mark in the password field and click on the next arrow “reset using your Apple ID“.

Tip 1: If you do not see the message that you can reset your password with Apple ID after three attempts, your account is not configured to allow reset with Apple ID.
Step 2: Enter your Apple ID and password, then click Next.

Method 2: Reset Forgotten MacBook Password Using Recovery Mode
If you haven’t set up a FileVault password, you can get a hidden password reset tool and use it to reset the password for any user account on your Mac.
1. Restart your Mac, immediately hold command + R until the Apple logo appears.
2. Select Disk Utility and click Continue.

How to unlock MacBook Pro without password when Filevault is enabled
Method 1: Use the recovery key to reset your login password
If you have created a FileVault password and created a recovery key, you can use the recovery key to reset your login password.
On your Mac, choose Apple menu > Restart or press your computer’s power button and click Restart.
Click on your user account, click on the question mark inside the password field, and click on the arrow next to “reset with your recovery key“.
Enter the recovery key, then click Next.

Method 2: Reset Mac Password Using Password Reset Wizard
If FileVault is enabled, you can reset your password using the Reset Password wizard:
- Wait for a minute at the login screen, until you see the message that you can use your Mac’s power button to shut down and restart in OS Recovery.

- Press the power button again to turn on your Mac.
- When the Reset Password window appears, select the item labeled “I forgot my password“, then click or tap the Next button. Reset password when filevault is enabled
- Enter the FileVault recovery key or Apple ID password to open the “Macintosh HD” drive, depending on which option you used when you first enabled FileVault, and select the Next button. The boot volume will be unlocked.

- A list of user accounts will appear. Select the account whose password you want to reset, then click or tap the Next button.
- Enter a new password, verify the password and provide new password details, then click the Next button.
- Account password will be reset. When you’re ready, click the Restart button. Then you should be able to start your Mac and log into your account with your new password.
