how to start a car using jumper cables

What’s worse than going to your car after a long day at work and having a dead battery. Maybe you left the interior light on, or your battery has reached the end of its life. Either way, the car battery doesn’t give you any signs of trouble until it’s too late, and then your car won’t start. Today we are going to tell you how to start a car using jumper cables.

So no matter how old your car is (or new), having working jumper cables and knowing how to use them is important.

First you need the right cables.

When you really need them, any configuration is better than none, but if you’re buying new jumper cables, Popular Mechanics recommends ones that are 4 to 6 gauge and at least 20 feet (6 meters) in length.

These long cables will be useful and make it easier to connect the battery if you can’t put two cars next to each other. Also look for jumpers with thicker straps and heavier weights. They will be strong and long.

Of course, when it’s time to charge your battery, handling the cables properly is very important.

Prevent the red and black clamps from touching each other and make sure the cable is neutral when fixing, especially when the clamps are connected to a live battery.

If the pack hits when “hot” it can take out one or two cars and it will create a fire.

Since improper use of jumper cables can be dangerous, follow each procedure carefully.

Most jumper cables have an instruction card or label so you can make sure you connect them correctly.

How to connect jumper cables

  • Start by parking a car with a good battery next to a car with a dead battery.
  • Open the hoods of both cars and find their batteries.
  • If the batteries are covered by a plastic cover, remove the cover to expose the battery housing.
  • Find the positive (+) and negative (-) terminals.
  • A positive terminal may be red, but this is not always the case, so it is best to look for a plus or minus sign to determine the polarity of the terminal. (Before installing the fasteners, be sure to remove any dirt from the posts.)
  • Next, remove your jumper cables and connect one of the red wires to the (+) terminal of the dead battery. Make sure the cast is properly connected.
  • Connect the corresponding end of the same cable to the positive (+) terminal of the working battery.
  • Connect one of the black cables to the negative (-) terminal of the right battery.
  • Make sure the cast is properly connected.
  • And instead of connecting the other end of the USB cable to the negative end of the dead battery, put it on a surface that is not on the dead car engine, such as a cover or a screw.

This will provide the ground for the jump start.

Start the battery

First start the car’s engine running and let it run for a few minutes.
Start the dead car’s engine and let it run for a few minutes. If a dead car starts without any problems, first remove the black connector from its battery.

Then, remove the black cable from the other car.

Finally, remove the small red battery from the good car, and from the dead battery.
It’s best to leave your car running for a long time to help recharge the battery, but you should also consider checking its voltage to make sure it doesn’t need to be replaced.

Jumper Cables FAQ

Can I get a jumper wire from the fuel station?

Although small cables may be available for purchase at gas stations, they are not always the best solution. This is especially true if you have an SUV or truck. It is best to use the strongest cables available, so that they can conduct the necessary power to start your car.

What are jumper cables used for?

Also called jumper wire or jumper wire, jumper wire is insulated wire.

They come in pairs and have clips that are used to connect the car battery to another power source.

These sources can be car or other batteries with the same voltage as the car that needs to be started.

Why do I need heavy duty jumper cables?

The jumper wire is lightweight and has a high gauge, allowing electricity to pass quickly to start your car.

This ensures that you can start your car in the worst conditions, including cold weather.
Should I turn off my car before disconnecting the jumper wire? Yes!

Do not fasten the seat belt while your car is running.

The vehicle and auxiliary source must be switched off before connecting or disconnecting. Otherwise, it may damage the car and may give you an electric shock.

Do I connect jumper cables?

First, make sure both cars are turned off.

Next, connect the red ring to the positive end of the removed battery (usually marked with a “+” sign).

Then connect the other end of one red cable to the positive end of the working battery (or whatever is used to start the car).

Attach the black connector to the negative end of the “donor” power source.

Then, put the black connector on the other end of the cables to the metal part of the car that has the battery removed.

After the cable is connected, start the car to work. Let it run for a minute or two, then try to start the other vehicle.
