If your gas tank is full but your engine isn’t getting gas, you can replace the fuel pump. However, first make sure that the problem is not a broken gas line, a clogged filter, or an electrical problem. Let us discuss about how to replace fuel pump that is located within your gas tank.

Warning: Use extreme caution when working with gasoline. Work in a hot ventilated area and keep electrical appliances and cigarettes away. Keep a fire extinguisher handy and use safety glasses, gloves and approved gas cans [source: Bumbeck ].

how to replace the fuel pump and gas tank for a car with a carburetor engine

  • Inspect the gas fuel line and replace it if it is cracked or leaking.
    • Disconnect the ground cable (usually black) from the negative (-) battery terminal.
    • Restore the gas tank pressure according to the instructions in the vehicle service manual.
    • Loosen the screw that connects the fuel line to the rear exhaust, if there is one, on the old fuel pump.
    • Disconnect the cable(s) from the pump.
    • Attach the end of the pipe you disconnected to a dowel or bolt.
    • Disconnect the fuel inlet hose that goes to the carburetor by holding the fuel hose on the ring while using another tool to tighten the nut.
    • Loosen the two mounting bolts and discard the old oil pump.
    • Remove any remaining sealant from the mounting flange.
    • Cover both sides of the new gasket with a lid.
    • Insert the mounting bolts into the new pump, and screw the gasket into place.
    • Install the new pump.
    • Make sure the rocker arm rests on the eccentric gear of the engine or the control rod is properly connected to the oil pump and the engine.
    • Connect the fuel inlet hose to the new pump.
    • First disconnect the hose from the carburetor.
    • Then connect the other end to the pump by connecting the free end to the carburetor.
    • Close the nut with two rings in the same way you removed the oil drain hose.
    • Be sure to tighten the fuel line (and the return vapor, if applicable).
    • Connect the ground cable to the negative battery terminal.
    • Start the engine and check the pump for leaks
