how to Open Command Prompt as Administrator in Windows 10 – 4 ways

This article is about how to open command prompt as Administrator in Windows 10. Sometimes we need to open commands directly as an administrator to get some information about the computer or change some settings.

This page shows you four quick and easy ways to open Command Prompt as an administrator in Windows 10.

HOW TO OPEN COMMAND PROMPT AS ADMINISTRATOR IN WINDOWS 10

  • Method 1: Use the search box
  • Method 2: Use Win+X menu
  • Method 3: Use the Run Dialog
  • Method 4: Use Task Manager

Method 1: Use the search box

  1. Click on the “Type here to search” box next to the Start button (Windows) or press Win + S to display the search box.
  2. Type cmd (or command prompt) in the search box.
  3. A command prompt shortcut will appear in the search results. Right click on it and select Run as administrator. Or, you can directly click Run as administrator in the right panel.
  4. If the User Account Control dialog box appears, click Yes to enable the command prompt to run as an administrator.

Method 2: Use Win+X menu

Right-click on the Windows icon on the left side of the taskbar or press the Windows key + X to bring up the Win + X menu (also known as the power menu). Then select Command Prompt (Admin) from the Win + X menu.

Tip: Starting with Windows 10 Creators Update, the Win+X menu has no direct commands by default and has been replaced by Windows PowerShell.

If you need Command directly from the Win + X menu, go to Settings to change Windows PowerShell to Command Prompt.

Method 3: Use the Run Dialog

  1. Press Win + R to bring up the Run dialog box.
  2. Type cmd in the box and press Ctrl + Shift + Enter on your keyboard. This will run as fast as an administrator.

Method 4: Use Task Manager

The first three are the easiest and fastest ways to open the application as an administrator in Windows 10. Next, I will introduce another method that is less common but useful – using the Task Manager.

  1. Right-click on the taskbar and select Task Manager to open the task manager.
  2. In Task Manager, click File > Run a new task.
  3. In the “Create a new task” dialog box that opens, type cmd in the box, check “Create this task with administrative rights”, and click Enter. This will run as fast as an administrator.
