How to make a trench with an edger in your garden – 4 easy steps

Garden edging completes the look of the garden bed, but it helps prevent weeds and makes the garden easier to maintain. A clean trench bed is less likely to grow grass and weeds from neighboring areas if you maintain its surface. The tip also helps hold the mulch so it doesn’t spill onto the lawn.

How to make a trench with an edger in your garden

Edging pieces do not require edge trimming or special tools.

Regular maintenance makes them an effective choice for defining decorative garden beds.

1. Mark the edges

Running twine or a garden socks along the desired edge, fixing it around the tree. For a vertical fence, place a stake at each end and stretch the twine between the stakes to mark the ends.

2. Insert the blade of a spade or edger six inches into the soil

Insert the blade at a 45 degree angle to create a slope that runs along the garden bed. Work along the string or pipe until you create a continuous stop along the entire border. Edge trimming helps prevent weeds from spreading from the edges and into the bed.

3. Cut the second line and the first cut

Place the second line of cutting between the first and the garden bed, extending the cutting to the first to create a V-shaped hole about six inches wide in the soil.

4. Remove the sod from the cut level

Use a trowel to cut the grass roots deeper than the level. Dump or compost the removed sod.

Trim any wet soil to make it smooth.

Check it monthly throughout the year and cut it back if the edge starts to drop or the plant starts to enter the border.
