how to insert footnote in microsoft word or endnote

This article is about how to insert footnote in Microsoft Word or Endnote. Although footnotes are not a commonly used formatting feature in Microsoft Word, you will be interested in having this feature if you want to create an academic or professional document that requires them.

You can insert footnotes or endnotes into Word from the Reference tab of the ribbon.

Footnotes and endnotes are additional information that you can add to a document and reference by using capital letters in the main text.

You can add multiple references to a single footnote by using the reference tool on the References tab of the ribbon.

Footnotes allow you to place additional information at the bottom of the page – that is, at the bottom – which you use to refer to the main point using letter numbers or symbols.

Footnotes are different from endnotes; footnotes appear on the referenced page, while endnotes appear at the end of the book.

Which one will you use? Whichever you prefer – or rather, which is called for in the writing or publishing style you use.

Adding footnotes is easy; the most difficult thing is to find the identity. Here’s what you need to do:

In a word, place the cursor at the end of the word where you want to place the heading that refers to the note.

Click the “References” tab on the ribbon.

In the Footer section, click “Insert Footer” or “Insert Footer“.

You will see the script above the cursor and the cursor will go under the foot.

Type a note.
Go back to the main page and continue writing.

Quick Tip: On a Mac, another way to add footnotes or notes in Word is to place your cursor where you want to place the note, click “Insert” on the Apple menu, then choose “Footnotes” and drop down menu.

You will see a dialog box where you can choose between footnotes and endnotes, and customize them.

How to customize footnotes or endnotes in Microsoft Word

These simple steps should be all you need to create a text and ending for a book, most of the time.

You can, however, customize them if you want them to look or perform different functions.

To access the footnotes option at the end, click the “References” tab on the ribbon and click the small arrow in the lower right corner of the Footnotes section.

A conclusion and conclusion box should appear.

There are many options in this small dialog box.

Manage where notes appear.

In the location section, you can select “Footer” or “Under text” to define the position of the footnote.

If you select “text below“, notes will appear directly below the last text on the page instead of at the bottom.

Change the footer or layout.

Click the drop-down menu next to “Columns” to organize the footnotes in columns instead of following the order of the main text.

Change the formatting of footnotes and endnotes.

You can specify the type of numbers, letters or other symbols used when adding footnotes.

It’s not just an aesthetic choice; If you have both footnotes and endnotes in the same document, make sure they are separate to avoid confusion.

Additionally, your editorial or publication guidelines may specify the numbering system to use for footnotes.

How to cross-reference your footnote and endnote in microsoft word

You may need to repeat the same reference several times throughout the document. Instead of adding the same footnote or note multiple times, you can refer to the first one whenever you need it throughout the book.

Here’s how to do it using footnotes.

If you want to skip the endnotes, the process is the same; just replace endnotes with footnotes during this process as needed.

To add an underscore or end point the usual way, place the cursor where you want to insert it a second time.

Click the “References” tab on the ribbon. In the subject section, click “Transfer“.

In the Cross-Reference dialog box, set the “Reference type” drop-down to “Footnote”.
From the “Insert reference to:” drop-down menu, select “landmark number (customized)“.
In the “What Footnotes” section, click the footnote you want to refer to, then click “Add“.

Click “Done” to close the dialog box.

You will see a symbol at the top that refers to the required footnotes.
